Hace unos días apareció la noticia en Digg, Menéame y las consiguientes decenas de blogs tecnológicos de que Ubuntu podría estar acortando la vida del disco duro de tu portátil. El culpable sería de la Gestión de energía, es decir, de las funciones que realiza el Sistema Operativo para que tu portátil gaste menos en ciertas circunstancias. Más concretamente, el culpable directo sería el perfil Portátil que podemos elegir en ese apartado. El motivo, visto muy por encima, es que obligaría a ciertos discos duros a apagarse demasiadas veces a la menor oportunidad, y estos discos duros tienen un cierto número de ciclos de esta clase apagado a partir del cual los fabricantes no garanticen que funcionen correctamente.
Casi con la misma rapidez ha salido otra noticia desmintiendo, o más bien matizando, a la primera, quitándole la mayor parte de la responsabilidad a Ubuntu. Para empezar, aunque es cierto que sucede, esto solo pasa en ciertos portátiles, y esa configuración no viene por defecto, ya que puede ser muy agresiva. Además, no solo el SO tiene acceso a esa configuración, así que puede que el firmware o incluso la BIOS que hayan proveído los fabricantes estén causando ese problema. ¿Y por qué esto solo puede pasar en Linux entonces? Porque MacOS y Windows seguramente ignoren estas configuraciones y establezcan unas propias.
De cualquier manera, y sin querer quitar responsabilidades a los SO, el problema de base lo han creado los fabricantes, creando estos discos duros con un tiempo de vida tan ridículamente corto mientras otros fabricantes no utilizan esta tecnología. Así que el titular, más que ser Ubuntu está acortando la vida de tus discos duros, debería ser: tu fabricante quiere que tu disco duro dure poco.
Actualización: Ahora también culpan a Apple de algo parecido, aunque el lógico culpable sea el fabricante Seagate (bueno, y de Apple por comprarlos).
